Purpose – Create our action calendar for 2012 for volunteer stewardship activities in our watershed.
Over 50 volunteers living near the Phalen Chain of Lakes—Phalen, Keller, Gervais, Kohlman lakes and Kohlman Creek in the cities of St. Paul, Maplewood, Little Canada and North St. Paul—participated in a networking picnic in August and visioning retreats in September convened by the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District. The result was a shared vision for watershed stewardship and hands‐on projects. With the Launching of the Stewards of the Phalen Chain of Lakes on December 1, we will formalize these ideas and create ACTION TEAMS identified at our September 22 Retreat.
EDUCATION: Increase public awareness for taking action, and connect kids with the natural environment as stewards.
CLEAN‐UPS & RESTORATION: Coordinate and increase volunteers to remove litter, leaves & invasives. Make Improvements for water quality. Expand native
habitat. Expand and connect natural corridors.
EVENTS/ CELEBRATIONS: Celebrate our chain of lakes and our efforts; educate and engage residents.
RECREATION: Get more people on and around the water; explore the greenways and trailways of the Phalen Chain of Lakes.
The Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District works to protect and improve local water quality and natural resources. It is generally bounded by the I-694/494 corridor and 35E and the Mississippi River, which encompasses sections of North St. Paul, Maplewood, White Bear Lake, Vadnais Heights, Little Canada, Oakdale, Woodbury, Landfall, Gem Lake and St. Paul.
STOPPING WATER WHERE IT DROPS
A FREE RAIN GARDEN FOR YOUR YARD SERIES
Learn how to design and build a rain garden. Sponsored by Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District and the cities of Maplewood and North St. Paul, the series will cover the steps in creating your own rain garden.
Attend the introductory class or take part in the whole series. From design principals, to hands-on field sessions, to individual design assistance, this series will teach you to assess your yard and resolve drainage issues while protecting waters downstream.
I) A RAIN GARDEN FOR YOUR YARD –CLASSROOM SESSION—APRIL 11
Taught by a landscape designer, this class provides the nuts and bolts of rain gardens and their purpose to improve water quality. Get inspired by the many design options in your community. This classroom session will be held on Wednesday, April 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Maplewood Public Libraray, 3025 Southlawn Dr, Maplewood. Register by April 2.
II) RAIN GARDEN SITE ASSESSMENT: DRAINAGE AND SOILS—April 24
Join us at 2278 Ariel St., North St. Paul, a local home, to learn how to analyze your site, test for soil infiltration and determine your drainage area. Visit the nearby Tibodeau home, winners of the 2010 Extreme Green Make-Over in Maplewood. Taught by a landscape specialist from the Ramsey Conservation District, this class will be held on Tuesday, April 24 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at 2278 Ariel St., North St. Paul. Pre-requisite: Rain Garden Classroom Session. Register by April 12.
III) RAIN GARDEN DESIGN WORKSHOP: GARDEN LAYOUT & PLANT DESIGN—MAY 8
A conservation district designer will provide an overview of design principals. Use information gathered in your site assessment to design your own rain garden. Master Gardeners and other gardening specialists will provide one-on-one design assistance. Note: Participants need to bring a map of their site and results of their soil infiltration test.
This workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Maplewood Nature Center, 2659 East 7th Street, Maplewood. Pre-requisite: Rain Garden Site Assessment Session. Register May 1.

Tours will be led by birding experts, local historians, and restoration advocates. The festivities at the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary will continue until 3PM with arts activities — including river flagmaking with Kinship of Rivers and art shows and demonstrations by local landscape painters — sponsored by the local community group, Lower Phalen Creek Project.
The Trust for Public Land conserves land for people to enjoy as parks, gardens, and other natural places, ensuring livable communities for generations to come.
